What's In My Studio?
I take photographs both on land and underwater, this post is for my land roaming adventures.
Here’s a quick rundown of the gear I rely on to capture my portraits and landscapes:
My DSLR Canon 5D Mark IV provides a full-frame sensor and robust performance that handle everything from low light to fast action.
I pair it with several L-series lenses:
EF 50mm f/1.2 is my go to lens for its dreamy background blur and crisp portraits
EF 70-200mm f/2.8 my second favorite for versatile telephoto reach and background bokeh for the dreamy portraits
EF 24-105mm f/4 a zoom for everyday flexibility, it is great for portraits of families with young kids and for events
EF 24-70mm f/2.8 a fast, standard zoom that covers everything from close-up details to mid-range group shots
EF 16-35mm f/2.8 captures sweeping landscapes and dramatic wide-angle scenes
The following are my creative prime lenses with large maximum apertures, making them ideal for capturing shallow depth of field and striking bokeh. They’re especially useful for portrait and artistic work, where their sharpness and ability to isolate the subject truly shine:
EF 35mm f/1.4 wonderful for environmental portraits and storytelling scenes
EF 85mm f/1.2 ideal for intimate portraits with velvety bokeh
EF 135mm f/2 a classic telephoto prime, it creates a creamy depth of field and crisp detail, it has a swirly looking bokeh
Each lens offers top-tier optics and color rendition, ensuring I’m always ready—whether it’s an intimate portrait or a sprawling landscape.
I bring just a few lenses to each session depending on the event, my most common combination if I go somewhere new and unknown is: 50mm, 70-200mm, 24-70mm and 16-35mm - they cover everything between wide angle scenes to intimate portraits. If I were to chose just one lens for a portrait I would go with 50mm, and if I were to choose just one lens for a celebration event I would go with 24-105mm.
I chose ProFoto for my lighting and strobe modifiers, and MagMod for flash modifiers:
ProFoto Flash - the easiest pro flash system out there!
MagMod Diffuser for my flash - magnetic magic
ProFoto Strobes - cordless pint size due goodness that never fails
ProFoto Connect for my camera to talk to the lights
I use various ProFoto softboxes for indoors
I have used this system and its predecessors for 15 years, and this list compiles my most used gear on land. My underwater gear list is much smaller, but a lot more fun!
